Activity: Search for Pictures

One web site, "Picture Australia", has many pictures from Australia's past. Go to this web site, and search for pictures of the beach (pictureaustralia.org). Many of these old pictures belong to public libraries, but they are not free to use.

You can also search Flickr, for beach photos which are free to use*. Or you can search Flickr from "Creative Commons").

Hints for searching:

• find a box with "search" next to it
• type in your "keywords" (search words)
• try different phrases, eg. "ocean", "sand", "sea", "beach swimming costume" ..

Share with your classmates.

Talk about the pictures, and what makes each one different. Which one do you like best?

* "Free to use"?

Some photos have a licence from "Creative Commons". This means you can use the photo, provided you give credit to the photographer (you can use the photo, if you publish the photographer's name.)

Flickr Licensing: look for this "additional information":

This means it may be okay to use the picture, if you credit the photographer. Read the licence to be sure.

You may not use this picture.

Some Australian museums will allow you to take copies of their pictures. To be sure, you must read the copyright licence.

Warning: you may find some pictures that offend you.
